A clean system can sound great at a moderate volume, then turn harsh, fuzzy, thin, or rattly the second you turn it up. Why Is My Car Audio Distorted at Higher Volume?

A factory radio can clip even with factory speakers, especially when bass boost, loudness processing, or an aggressive EQ setting is active. An aftermarket amplifier can also clip if its gain is set too high. Gain is not a volume control. It matches the amp's input sensitivity to the radio's output voltage. Turning it up to make the system louder often produces distortion before the amplifier reaches its true clean output.
