It is a complete system plan that accounts for engine noise, open-air listening, battery capacity, water exposure, and how the boat is actually used. A system that sounds great tied up at the dock can fall apart at cruising speed if the speaker placement, power, and tuning are wrong.
Here is what a clean, usable marine audio build can look like on a 22-foot center console or deck boat. The same approach applies to many fishing boats, pontoons, wake boats, and runabouts, although the hardware and mounting locations will change.

For this example, the owner wants clear music while cruising, enough output for sandbar weekends, and equipment that can handle rain, spray, and regular washdowns. They do not need a competition stereo setup or a tower packed with speakers. They want a system that plays loud without becoming harsh, draining the battery too quickly, or taking up needed storage space.
The finished system uses a marine-rated Bluetooth or touchscreen head unit at the helm, four 6.5-inch marine coaxial speakers, a compact four-channel marine amplifier, and an optional 10-inch marine subwoofer with its own mono amplifier. The main speakers handle vocals, guitars, and high-frequency detail. The subwoofer fills in low-end bass that small open-air speakers cannot reproduce efficiently.

Wiring for Water, Vibration, and Service Access
Marine audio wiring needs to be more deliberate than typical vehicle wiring. Use marine-grade, tinned copper wire where possible, especially on boats exposed to saltwater. Tinned wire resists corrosion far better than standard bare copper wire when moisture finds its way into a connection.
Every connection should be crimped correctly, protected with heat-shrink, and secured away from moving parts and sharp edges. Wire runs should be supported so vibration does not cause chafing over time. Leaving loose speaker wire behind a panel may work on day one, but it can turn into an intermittent electrical problem after a season of rough water.
Keep signal cables separated from high-current power wiring when practical. This helps reduce the chance of alternator whine or electrical interference. If the boat has a VHF radio, GPS, fish finder, or other electronics, plan the audio wiring route around those systems instead of forcing everything through the same crowded opening.
A clean install should also be serviceable. Labeling amplifier channels, fuse locations, and speaker leads may seem minor, but it makes future troubleshooting much faster. It also helps when an owner decides to add a subwoofer, tower speakers, RGB lighting, or another audio zone later.
Add Bass Without Sacrificing Storage

It is set to match the radio's clean output voltage to the amplifier's input range. Set too high, it can cause distortion that damages speakers long before the system sounds obviously bad.
For the four main speakers, use a high-pass crossover to keep deep bass out of the smaller drivers. A starting point around 80 to 100 Hz is common, then adjusted based on the speaker size, mounting location, and sound preference. If a subwoofer is added, use a low-pass crossover in a similar range and check the phase setting so the bass blends with the cockpit speakers rather than disappearing.
Test the system with the engine off and running. Listen at normal cruising volume, not just while the boat is sitting quietly on a trailer. The goal is clean vocals and a strong, controlled sound across the seating area. A little less bass and a little more clarity usually works better on the water than a system tuned for a closed vehicle cabin.
